Introduction

Department of Science and Environment Education offers semester-based master level courses in Chemistry Education in Nepal. It offers a four-semester M.Ed. programme in Chemistry Education for science education graduates and one year B.Ed. in Science and Education for Science graduates. Chemistry Education consists of organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, natural product chemistry, bio-chemistry, physical chemistry, food chemistry, teaching chemistry, modern science teaching, environmental chemistry, research and statistics, nuclear chemistry, polymer chemistry and practicum as specialization subjects in chemistry education. The department has well equipped laboratories.

Currently, students at this department study a four-semester M.Ed. courses with chemistry education as their specialization subject. This department has also successfully offered a post graduate diploma in education with specialization in science education

Courses and Description

Course Title: Applied Inorganic Chemistry

This course is designed to acquaint the students with the knowledge and skills of Applied Inorganic Chemistry.  It is divided into two parts: Theory and Practical. The theory part of inorganic chemistry gives special emphasis on atomic structure, inorganic reaction mechanism,  spectroscopy, fertilizers, inorganic polymers, industrial chemistry, organic and inorganic reagents used in inorganic analysis, and role of metal ions in biological system. The practical parts include practical activities/ experiments about applied inorganic chemistry.

Course Title: Advanced Organic Chemistry

This course is designed to acquaint the students with the knowledge and skills of “Advanced Organic Chemistry”.  It is divided into two parts: Theory and Practical.  The main aim of the course is to widen the horizon of knowledge and understanding of students with a view to make them able to identify significant problems of organic chemistry. It deals with organic chemistry with special emphasis on structure of organic molecules, mechanism of organic reactions, and poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, heterocyclic compounds and organometallic compounds. The practical parts include practical activities/ experiments about advanced organic chemistry

Course Title: Natural Product Chemistry

This course is designed to acquaint the students with the knowledge and skills of “Natural Product Chemistry”.  It is divided into two parts: Theory and Practical.  The main aim of the course is to widen the horizon    of knowledge and understanding of students with a view to make them able to identify the significance and importance of natural product in his/ her life. It deals with natural product chemistry with special  emphasis to introduce Alkaloids, Terpenoids, Carbohydrate, Vitamin, Amino acid, Organic Synthesis, Synthetic dyes and polymers, Vitamins and Steroids and Hormones. The practical parts include practical activities/ experiments about natural product chemistry

Course Title: Fundamentals of Biochemistry

This course is designed to acquaint the students with the knowledge and skills of “Biochemistry”.  It is divided into two parts: Theory and Practical.  The main aim of the course is to widen the horizon of knowledge and understanding of students with a view to make them able to identify significant problems of biochemistry. It deals with biochemistry with special emphasis on proteins and amino acids, enzymes, lipids and fatty acids, photosynthesis, biochemistry of blood, antibodies and biosynthesis. The practical portion includes practical activities and experiments  on biochemistry. 

Course Title: Applied Physical Chemistry              

This course is designed for the students who study Chemistry Education at M.Ed. Level. It  consists of two parts : Part I. Theory(T) and Part II. Practical (P). This course consists of  fundamental concepts, theories and practical knowledge of Physical chemistry that are applied to many area of chemical education. The theory includes topics like Liquid mixture, Photochemistry, Thermodynamics, Chemical kinetics, Electrolytic conductance. The practical portion includes practical activities and experiments on Chemical Kinetics, Electrolytic Conduction, Photochemistry, Partition Coefficient.

Course Title: Advanced Inorganic Chemistry

This course is designed for the students who specialize in chemistry Education at M.Ed. level. The main aim of this course is to provide a broad and advanced knowledge in the field of inorganic chemistry. This course is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the different theoretical knowledge in the field of inorganic chemistry and basically focuses on the study of structure and properties of inorganic compounds. This course includes 6 units as Periodic classification of elements, Chemical bonding, Coordination chemistry, Organometallic compounds, Acid-base chemistry and Redox reactions. The second part is practical portion and includes lab works related to the Qualitative salt analysis, Gravimetric analysis and Preparation of Some inorganic compounds.

Course Title: Modern Science Teaching

This course is designed to develop the advanced knowledge and understanding into the realms of science education. The main aim of the course is to widen the horizon of knowledge and understanding of students with a view to make them able to identify significant problems of school science education. It deals with science education with special emphasis on constructivism, misconceptions, e-learning, instructional module, research, concept mapping, post-modern approach in science education, etc.

Course Title: Food Chemistry

This course is designed to acquaint the students with the knowledge and skills of “Food chemistry”.  It is divided into two parts: Theory and Practical.  The main aim of the course is to widen the horizon of knowledge and understanding of students with a view to make them able to identify significant problems and their solution of food chemistry. It deals with food chemistry with special emphasis on food and nutrition, functional components of foods, browning in foods, food additives, minerals in foods and human nutrition.

Course Title: Teaching Chemistry              

The course emphasizes on giving knowledge of Chemistry Education with a focus on its aims, values and objectives of teaching Chemistry. Besides curriculum innovation, approaches and planning for Chemistry education, chemistry and society, equipment and chemicals, accidents and safety rules, chemistry laboratory, the chemistry teacher, misconception regarding teaching chemistry, researches in teaching chemistry and evaluation in Chemistry education are the other important areas of Teaching Chemistry.

Course Title: Advanced Physical Chemistry                      

This course aims to enhance the advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of physical chemistry. It is divided into two parts; the first part is theoretical portion and includes the four units such as Electrochemistry, Thermodynamics, Surface chemistry and Solid state chemistry. The Second part is a practical portion that covers the laboratory works on the topics Adsorption reaction, Potentiometric Titration, Ptitration, Electrochemistry and Thermochemistry.

Course Title: Environmental Chemistry                 

This course is designed to give the knowledge and skills of Environmental Chemistry. It consists of two parts viz. theory and practical. This course  emphasized  to introduce atmospheric structures and air, water, land, solid waste, trace elements thermal and radiation pollution. This course also focused on green chemistry for emerging green technology. The practical parts include practical activities \ experiments about environmental chemistry.

Course Title: Research and Statistics

This course is designed to acquaint the students with the knowledge and skills of “Research and Statistics”.  The main aim of the course is to widen the horizon of knowledge and understanding of students with a view to make them able to identify significant problems of Research and Statistics. It deals with special emphasis on type of research methods, theories and philosophy in research, various approaches in research, statistical analysis for quantitative test, development of hypothesis and tests, inferential statistics, qualitative data analysis procedures and methods and procedures for development and review for different research work.

Course Title: Nuclear Chemistry

This course it aims to provide the students with basic and advanced knowledge in the area of nuclear chemistry. It covers wider area of nuclear chemistry elements of the nuclear structure and systematic, isotopes and nuclear forces, nuclear radiations and its effect, nuclear emission and radioactive decay, detection methods for nuclear radiations and nuclear reactions.  The course consists of six unites.  Unit I emphasizes to the composition and structure of nuclei. Unit II Covers the isotopic preparation and application and different types of nuclear forces operate inside the nucleus of atom. Unit III provides knowledge of different types of nuclear radiations, their interaction with matter and their effects. Unit IV provides the information regarding different types of nuclear emission, their decay processes and theory related to nuclear emission. Unit V is about the detection methods for nuclear radiations and Unit VI is about nuclear reactions and nuclear reactors.

Course Title: Polymer Chemistry               

This course is designed to acquaint the students with the knowledge and skills of “Polymer chemistry”.  The main aim of the course is to widen the horizon of knowledge and understanding of students on polymer chemistry. It deals with polymer chemistry with special emphasis on kinetics of polymerisation, chemical and geometrical structure of polymer molecule, individual polymers, polymer reactions, polymer processing and rheology, polymer synthesis and its application and polymer degradation, stability and environment issues.
